T he tree glitters strong in our nation’s capitol for all to see. Thousands each year are touched as they are reminded of our nation’s youngest cancer patients.

Michael Winslow and Orlando Philharmonic
The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s Darden Family Concert “Carnival of the Animals” B.A.S.E. Camp Benefit Concert
The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra unites with featured performer Michael Winslow to provide a truly magical event at their Carnival of the Animals 11 January 2009, 3:00 p.m. matinée concert to benefit B.A.S.E. Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation.
The interactive Darden Family Concerts are designed to demystify the world of classical music for children of all ages. The family-friendly concerts are as educational as they are entertaining. In addition to a fabulous concert presented by the Orlando Philharmonic, participants enjoy a variety of pre-concert family and children’s activities, where you can try your hand at an assortment of instruments at the “Instrument Petting Zoos,” and even step up to the podium and conduct the Orlando Philharmonic!
Saint Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals is a beloved musical salute to fur, feathers and fins. There's a majestic lion, braying mules, a dancing elephant, and bouncy kangaroos. Even the fossils join in with a fast and rattly dance-all portrayed by the orchestra’s instruments. Everyone is invited, and actor Michael Winslow narrates this jovial party. A master of vocal gymnastics, Winslow can imitate over 10,000 sound effects using his voice alone. Whether he is recreating the frenzy of a guitar player, or the roar of a jet plane, his talent is truly remarkable and his versatility admirable and enjoyable for all ages!

Beauty trumps adversity

Jenny Andreasson of the Winter Park Observer wrote a story about a recent event at B.A.S.E. Camp. Here is an excerpt.
Although Danny only had one line in the 15-minute play, his mother, Cindy Whitaker, beamed with pride from her seat in front of the wooden stage, which was draped with a boldly colored patchwork curtain and decorated with hand-painted murals of Monster Island.
The production of "Momo-taro-san" on Friday, Aug. 8, was the culmination of the week-long theater camp attended by children who have been affected by cancer — ones who have it or have a sibling who has it.

Conquer Childhood Cancer Act of 2008
On July 16, the Senate unanimously passed The Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act of 2008 (H.R. 1553). The bill had also passed the House unanimously on June 12. The bill significantly increases the federal investment in childhood cancer research, a LLS priority. The bill would authorize $150 million over five years to develop grants for research fellowships in pediatric cancer, to fund a population-based national childhood cancer database and to award grants to childhood cancer organizations to raise public awareness, ensuring access to the best available therapies for pediatric cancers.
"Too many young people's lives were cut short by cancer, but their hopes were not," said Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI). "We have made great advances in treating cancer, but there is still much more to be done. The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act will deliver much needed hope and support to children and families battling cancer and more resources for vital pediatric cancer research programs."
The bill had been introduced in the House by Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-OH) and in the Senate by Sens. Reed and Norm Coleman (R-MN). During the bill's mark-up in the House, it was renamed after the Ohio representative's daughter, Caroline, who lost her battle with neuroblastoma at age 9.
President Bush held a bill signing ceremony on July 29 with Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Pryce, Reed and Coleman as well as several families and children with pediatric cancer from Ohio, Rhode Island and Texas. With the president's signing of H.R. 1553, the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act is now law!

We Need Your Financial Support

Our mission is to provide a YEAR ROUND series of programs for children and families facing the challenge of living with CANCER and other LIFE THREATENING, hematology related illnesses.
Over the past 25 years of serving Central Florida children and families, B.A.S.E. Camp has striven to help with the day-to-day challenges which children and families face. It is our goal to be a consistent presence upon which families can rely. We support our families for the long-term, throughout their journey.
We Need Your Financial Support. Our statement of services, and financial summary is provided for your information.
Ocoee Professional Firefighters Golf Tournament

We are the Ocoee Professional Fire Fighters. Our group is comprised of approximately forty men and women who are public servants in the Fire Department within the City of Ocoee. Each of us provides a necessary service to our community by working in one of the following positions: Firefighters, Engineers, Lieutenants, Fire Inspectors, EMT's and Paramedics. The members of our Local are active in many aspects of local life within our community. We consistently participate in charitable activities and fund-raisers throughout the year. We have hosted events, as well as participating in several functions in order to help some of our own members' families with health challenges. Each year we continue to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association search for a cure for the over one-hundred neuromuscular diseases by conducting our Boot Drive for Jerry's Kids. There are several other events that we participate in annually such as: March of Dimes, Relay for Life, Big Orange Games, Fully Involved, Seniors First and several others.

On October 24th, our Local is hosting a golf tournament at Legends Golf and Country Club in Clermont for the purpose of raising funds for our charitable efforts. The tournament is set up as a Four Person Scramble with several prizes, food and fun events to be enjoyed. This is our third golf tournament and we are looking forward to having it become a successful annual event.
We are actively seeking sponsorship and participants for this worthwhile and entertaining outing. There are several sponsor packages available and we would like to offer you the chance to get involved and help us make this golf tournament a huge success. It is our intent to create a dedicated funding source for local community charities. Partial proceeds will be given to B.A.S.E. camp, a local organization set up to help children that are challenged with cancer. We are striving to host and participate in as many local worthwhile events in the future as well.
With your help, and others like you, we can continue to help the needy in our area to have a better quality of life. We appreciate and thank you for your support in advance.

Quality of Life Act

I wanted to let you know that there has been some recent action regarding the Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivorship and Quality of Life Act that you should be aware of.
Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has introduced a companion legislation to HR4450 in the Senate.
Those wishing to view the bill can do so at the following link on her website press release . Note that In the release there is reference to a 2005 IOM report rather than the 2003 IOM report as the impetus for the legislation. Sen. Clinton's staffers are aware of this error and will be revising the press release shortly.

Pediatric Oncology Partnerships Are Models for Success
In this special issue of the

As you will see, these partnerships have markedly reduced pediatric cancer mortality and will most certainly hasten our progress against other cancers, such as
osteosarcoma and
brain tumors, for which prognosis remains poor.

Family Needs Car / Computer
My name is Miranda. My husband and I are parents to two wonderful children, Morgan and Blake. We live in Polk County, Florida. On January 1, 2008, Blake was diagnosed with what the doctors believed was an AT/RT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor) brain tumor. He receives treatment in Orlando, FL. This is a rare and very aggressive cancerous tumor and requires very aggressive treatment with very powerful chemo drugs. This tumor was located in the back of Blake's brain. In the month of January, Blake underwent five surgeries, four of which were on his brain. Because of where the brain was located in his brain, Blake now needs to have a shunt to help drain the fluid in his head. Blake has also been to Shands Children's Hospital in Gainesville, FL where he had to go through a stem harvest for the doctors to collect his stem cells because he also requires three stem cell transplants. Blake will also have to have five to six weeks of radiation.
Currently, Blake is doing very well. He has just completed his third round of chemotherapy and has been able to return home. While, Blake and I were at the hospital, the doctor called me and told me that after doing some further tests on Blake's tumor, they found out the type of tumor that Blake actually has/had is called "Anaplastic Large Cell Melludoblastoma" or possibly a Melludoblastmyoma. This type of tumor is more aggressive than an AT/RT tumor because it requires stronger full cranial and spinal cord radiation. With having this kind of radiation, Blake is facing the possibility of having learning disabilities, development problems, short-term memory problem, and growth problems in addition to the short-term side effects. The reoccurrence rate for this tumor is at 60%, which is worse than with the AT/RT tumor. In three weeks, Blake has to return to Gainesville to begin his transplants. Blake and I will be up in Gainesville for three months. Once up in Gainesville, we will find out where the radiation treatment will be done. The doctors have made us aware of the possibility that the radiation could be done in Gainesville also. Which if it is, Blake and I will have to stay in Gainesville for an addition two months. This makes it a little difficult for my family and I, because my husband and I only have one vehicle. There are several things that we need; however, there are three things that we need now.
One thing is we need another vehicle so that I would be able to get Blake to the hospitals and to the doctor's appointments, so that my husband would not have to take time off from work.
The second thing is another computer
and the last thing is, we just need some money. Any kind of help that we can get would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Miranda
